Where groups usually start
New York, NY · Queens (Jackson Heights, Richmond Hill), Manhattan
Pew Research Center estimates the New York metro area had about 710,000 Indian Americans in 2023, the largest of any US metro; the 2020 Census counted 792,367 single-race Asian Indian residents in the wider New York City region.
The Federation of Indian Associations holds the India Day Parade on Madison Avenue in Manhattan each August, a recurring event that draws group travel from across the tri-state area.
Edison / Iselin / Jersey City, NJ · Edison, Iselin (Woodbridge), Jersey City (India Square), Robbinsville
Iselin, New Jersey was reported in 2017 data as having a 42.6% Asian Indian population, described as the highest share of any census-designated place nationally, and Jersey City's India Square is described as one of the highest concentrations of Asian Indians in the Western Hemisphere; Pew estimates 440,000 Indian Americans live in New Jersey.
BAPS Swaminarayan Akshardham in Robbinsville accepts advance bookings for groups of 15 or more on weekdays other than Tuesday, which is the kind of temple day trip groups from the Edison corridor can arrange by coach.
Chicago, IL · Devon Avenue (West Ridge), Naperville, Schaumburg, Lemont
An estimated 255,523 Indian Americans lived in the Chicago metro area in 2023, the second-largest Indian American population among US metros and the largest Asian subgroup in the region; over 80% live in the suburbs.
The Hindu Temple of Greater Chicago in Lemont asks tour groups to request permission from its manager in advance.
Dallas-Fort Worth, TX · Frisco, Allen, Collin County, Irving
Pew estimates about 270,000 Indian Americans in the Dallas metro in 2023; a 2021 count put Collin County at 100,027 Indian residents, about 9% of the county.
Radha Krishna Temple of Dallas in Allen runs an 11-day Navratri program with nightly Garba, the type of multi-evening event where families and temple groups arrange shared transport.
San Francisco Bay Area, CA · Fremont, Santa Clara County, San Jose
Pew estimates about 260,000 Indian Americans in the San Francisco metro in 2023, and the 2020 Census shows Indian as the largest ancestry group in Fremont at 29.3% of residents.
Houston / Sugar Land, TX · Sugar Land, Fort Bend County
Fort Bend County had a 22.18% Asian population in the 2020 census, the largest share of any Texas county, and in 2019 Indian Americans made up almost half of its Asian residents; Pew counts about 570,000 Indian Americans statewide in Texas.
The Shri Sita Ram Foundation has staged a large Diwali-Dussehra Mela in Sugar Land, with the Houston area event reported as drawing thousands.
Washington, DC area · Fairfax County, VA, Montgomery County, MD, Loudoun County, VA
About 117,300 Indian immigrants lived in the Washington and Baltimore metros in 2012-2016 ACS data, with the largest numbers in Fairfax County (32,500), Montgomery County (25,000) and Loudoun County (17,700).
Common coach itineraries
New York -> Washington DC -> Niagara Falls -> New York East Coast loop (5-6 days)
New York was the most-visited state by international air arrivals in 2024, and the NYC metro is the largest Indian American hub, so groups often combine family visits with the capital and the falls.
| Leg | Miles | Drive time |
|---|---|---|
| New York → Washington DC | 225 | ~4.3 h |
| Washington DC → Niagara Falls | 369 | ~8.4 h |
| Niagara Falls → New York | 375 | ~7.6 h |
- The Washington to Niagara leg is over 8 hours of driving on its own; with meal stops and loading it approaches the 15-hour on-duty window, so many operators split it with an overnight (49 CFR 395.5).
- Niagara Falls USA reports Buffalo Niagara International Airport is about 19 miles from the falls, an alternative group arrival point.
- Confirm vegetarian and Jain meal stops with the operator in advance; this is a planning question, not a published rule.
New Jersey / New York -> Akshardham (Robbinsville) -> Philadelphia -> Washington DC temple and history tour (2-3 days)
Swaminarayan Akshardham opened in 2023 and is described as the largest Hindu mandir in the Western Hemisphere, which gives family and temple groups a reason to travel to central New Jersey.
| Leg | Miles | Drive time |
|---|---|---|
| New York → Robbinsville NJ | 46 | ~1.5 h |
| Philadelphia → Washington DC | 136 | ~2.7 h |
- Akshardham is closed on Tuesdays; group tours of 15 or more must be booked at least five days ahead and do not run on weekends, national holidays or select Hindu festivals.
- Free timed-entry reservations are required on six federal holidays plus Diwali; plan about 2 to 2.5 hours on site.
- The Robbinsville to Philadelphia distance was not sourced here; ask the operator for the routing.
- Modest dress is required (shoulders, chest, back and knees covered) and shoes come off inside; brief the group before boarding.
Los Angeles -> Las Vegas -> Grand Canyon South Rim (3-4 days)
NTTO reported India among the top five source markets for visits to US national parks and monuments in 2025, with 546,000 visitors, and California and Nevada are among the top states visited by international air travelers.
| Leg | Miles | Drive time |
|---|---|---|
| Los Angeles → Las Vegas | 269 | ~4.4 h |
| Las Vegas → Grand Canyon South Rim | 276 | ~4.7 h |
- Grand Canyon requires a Commercial Use Authorization for tour buses; vehicles with 26 or more seats pay a flat $300 entry fee, vehicles with 1-25 seats pay $8 per person (children 15 and under exempt), and park passes are not accepted for commercial tours.
- The park accepts cards only for entrance fees.
- Each leg is under 5 hours of driving, so the 10-hour driving limit is workable, but an overnight in Las Vegas or Tusayan/Williams avoids a long final day.
San Francisco -> Yosemite National Park -> San Francisco (2-3 days)
Yosemite is a national park reachable from the Bay Area, the region where Fremont and Santa Clara County have large Indian American communities, and national parks rank among top activities for Indian visitors in NTTO reporting.
| Leg | Miles | Drive time |
|---|---|---|
| San Francisco → Yosemite Valley | 195 | ~4.5 h |
- The NPS says 4-5 hours from San Francisco (195 miles); Los Angeles is 313 miles, about 6 hours.
- Tioga Road, Glacier Point Road and Mariposa Grove Road close for winter; some areas are inaccessible by car from about November through May, and chains may be required.
- NPS cautions that GPS can mislead in and around the park; ask the operator how the driver will route.
Dallas (Frisco/Allen) -> Houston (Sugar Land) Texas temple and family circuit (2 days)
Dallas and Houston are the two main Indian American metros in Texas, which Pew counts at about 570,000 Indian Americans statewide; Frisco hosts Karya Siddhi Hanuman Temple and Allen hosts Radha Krishna Temple of Dallas.
| Leg | Miles | Drive time |
|---|---|---|
| Dallas → Houston | 239 | ~3.8 h |
- Distance converted from 384.9 km.
- Karya Siddhi Hanuman Temple lists weekday hours of 8am-1pm and 5:30-8:30pm and weekend hours of 8am-8:30pm; time arrivals around the midday weekday closure.
- A 3.8-hour leg leaves room for a temple stop within a single driving day.
New York -> Boston campus and family visit (2-3 days)
India topped overseas student arrivals in December 2024 (25,930), which points to families visiting students; groups pairing New York arrivals with university cities is a planning pattern, not a published statistic.
| Leg | Miles | Drive time |
|---|---|---|
| New York → Boston | 209 | ~4.1 h |
- Graduation weekends fill hotels and curb space; book the coach early.
- A single 4-hour leg fits well within the 10-hour driving limit.
Dates that fill up coaches
Indian wedding season (muhurat dates) · Peaks roughly October-February (strongest November-January) with a second wave April-June
Multi-day weddings of several hundred guests create demand for hotel-to-venue guest shuttles, airport transfers and baraat-day transport; dates follow auspicious calendar dates, so many weddings cluster on the same weekends.
Navratri / Garba and Dussehra · Autumn; 2026 dates are October 11-20 (Dussehra October 20)
Nine nights of Garba and Dandiya draw families and temple groups to evening events; large venues can sell out well ahead.
Navratri Mahotsav at Radha Krishna Temple of Dallas, Allen, TX, October 10-20, 2026 · Edison-area Garba nights (NJ Convention & Expo Center and other venues), Edison, NJ, Navratri season, typically September-October
Diwali · Autumn, lunar calendar; November 8 in 2026
Family gatherings, temple visits and city festivals; Akshardham requires free timed reservations on Diwali.
Diwali at Times Square, New York, NY, Saturday, October 24, 2026 · Shri Sita Ram Foundation Diwali-Dussehra Mela, Sugar Land / Houston area, TX, Around October-November; venue has varied by year (2017 edition reported at Constellation Field)
India Independence Day celebrations · Around August 15; the New York parade is typically held on a Sunday in mid-August
Community organizations and families travel in groups to parades and festivals.
India Day Parade (Federation of Indian Associations), Madison Avenue, New York, NY, Sunday, August 16, 2026, noon · Naperville India Day celebration, Naperville, IL, Annual, around Independence Day (date varies)
Holi · Spring, lunar calendar; March 4 in 2026
Temple-hosted color festivals attract large groups including non-Hindu visitors.
Holi Festival of Colors at Sri Sri Radha Krishna Temple, Spanish Fork, UT, Late March (March 28-29 in 2025)
Ganesh Chaturthi · Late summer, lunar calendar; September 14 in 2026
Temple and community celebrations lead to group visits and idol-immersion events; confirm event details with the organizing temple.
US rules and practicalities
Driver hours on multi-day tours
Federal rules for passenger-carrying drivers prohibit driving more than 10 hours after 8 consecutive hours off duty and driving after 15 hours on duty following 8 consecutive hours off. Weekly limits are 60 hours in 7 days, or 70 hours in 8 days for carriers that operate every day. A leg like Washington to Niagara Falls (about 8.4 hours) uses most of a driving day, so operators often split it or add a second driver.
Airport arrivals for international groups
At JFK, pre-booked rides meet passengers at the ground transportation area, and the airport warns against anyone offering rides who is not in an official uniform. Terminal curb rules differ by airport and terminal, so ask the operator which pickup point and meeting method it will use, and give the driver the flight numbers so pickup can follow customs and baggage delays.
Tipping the driver in the US
Tipping is customary but optional. One charter-industry guide suggests roughly $50 to $150 per day or $5 to $15 per passenger per day for multi-day trips, and $50 to $150 flat for weddings and special events. Check the quote for any service fee, since an administrative charge may not go to the driver.
Baraat and wedding guest transport
A baraat is the groom's procession to the wedding venue, accompanied by family, friends, dhol drummers or a band; guests often travel between hotels and the venue across several events. For a baraat on private property such as a hotel lot, a venue agreement is generally the key step, while public streets typically need a municipal special-event permit requested weeks ahead (one planning guide suggests 4-6 weeks). Check local noise rules for dhol music and tell the coach operator the baraat start time and route.
Insurance minimums for coach and minibus operators
For-hire interstate passenger carriers must carry at least $5,000,000 in financial responsibility for vehicles seating 16 or more (including the driver) and at least $1,500,000 for vehicles seating 15 or fewer. Ask any operator for its USDOT number and certificate of insurance and compare it with FMCSA records.
Temple visits by coach
BAPS Akshardham in Robbinsville requires advance booking for groups of 15 or more, is closed Tuesdays, and enforces modest dress and no outside food. The Hindu Temple of Greater Chicago asks non-Hindu tour groups to request permission from its manager before visiting. Contact the temple before fixing the coach schedule.
